The StarFish Story

An old man was walking along the beach, when he came upon a part of the sand where thousands of starfish had washed ashore. A little further down the beach he saw a young woman, who was picking up the starfish one at a time and tossing them back into the ocean. "Oh you silly girl," he exclaimed. "You can't possibly save all of these starfish. There's too many." The woman smiled and said, "I know. But I can save this one, " and she tossed another into the ocean, "and this one", toss, "and this one..."

SuperPacu met a starfish along the shore of Samal Island.

I could remember that this story was posted in our bulletin board way back when I was still a student. I really like this story, it's simple (not as complicated as The Little Prince, Excuse my French. hehe) and striking, in a way that I don't have to puzzle out it's Analogy. I thought a student from our school composed this, that's why this story is all over our school. As I tried to look for it's author in the internet however I would always find the author as anonymous. Out of the blue, I found this:

The Starfish Story adapted from the Star Thrower

by Loren Eiseley. (1907-1977)

Once upon a time, there was a wise man who used to go to the ocean to do his writing. He had a habit of walking on the beach before he began his work.

One day, as he was walking along the shore, he looked down the beach and saw a human figure moving like a dancer. He smiled to himself at the thought of someone who would dance to the day, and so, he walked faster to catch up.

As he got closer, he noticed that the figure was that of a young man, and that what he was doing was not dancing at all. The young man was reaching down to the shore, picking up small objects, and throwing them into the ocean.

He came closer still and called out "Good morning! May I ask what it is that you are doing?"

The young man paused, looked up, and replied "Throwing starfish into the ocean."

"I must ask, then, why are you throwing starfish into the ocean?" asked the somewhat startled wise man.

To this, the young man replied, "The sun is up and the tide is going out. If I don't throw them in, they'll die."

Upon hearing this, the wise man commented, "But, young man, do you not realize that there are miles and miles of beach and there are starfish all along every mile? You can't possibly make a difference!"

At this, the young man bent down, picked up yet another starfish, and threw it into the ocean. As it met the water, he said, "It made a difference for that one."

This story has appeared all over the web in various forms, usually with no credit given to Mr. Eiseley. Sometimes it is a little girl throwing the starfish into the ocean, sometimes a young man, once even an elderly Indian. In any form it is a beautiful story and one that makes you think. Loren Eiseley was a anthropologist who wrote extensively. He was the 'wise man' in the story, and he was walking along a beach after a storm and encountered the fellow throwing the starfish back.

Doom,

Comfort zones

My first design that shared to the public was quite plain and simple. It was just solid background and text. I was happy enough to see people’s comment on wanting to use it as shirt design. It was even overwhelming to see that they are using it as their avatar. Creating it was aimless. Critics were nameless.

Recently, a friend of mine requested me to create a design for their concert poster. I was hesitant at first since I only know how to use the basics of photoshop. This design is far different than the first one. I am creating for someone. I have critics.

Watch Dream Girls Concert. Feb 22, 2010 at SPC.

When you are used to do something, although it may bite and fright but as long as it does not kill you, you consider it as comfort zone. School is a comfortable arena. Even if I get to face dreadful examinations, meeting the deadliest deadline, and encountering severely toxic people (whether a patient, professor, or a silly classmate), I know I will get though it. The feeling of being comfortable gave me the assurance that I will survive.

After leaping beyond school grounds, you’ll face a new arena. It is like viewing a city with tall buildings, alluring and exciting. However, you can also vividly see the thick mists surrounding it. Blur. Fuzzy. Scary. This is world of unknown. This is the world of reality. To some, they may spend their lifetime standing still, watching things happen. To some, may need to eat humble pie, back down then resilient. To most, we creep, we crawl, we stoop, we stand, we walk, we run, and then we fly.

It is scary out here,

Exciting yet scary. Scary yet exciting.

But I don’t want to get behind.

SPC Motorcade

When: February 9, 2010
Where: Around Davao
What: San Pedro College Motorcade and Victory Get Together (
sige na nga Party)

On the list of nursing schools in the Philippines (with 100 and more examinees), SPC ranked 9! We also have a board exam topnotcher, Rio Michelle Yap Renomeron (5th place). Salamat Lord! Mataas ang passing rate and may topnotcher(s) ang school every board exam, sa susunod po ulit.

10:30 am. At School, Distribution of shirts.
It states, "Life is Simple. Eat. Sleep. Save Lives"
(Front) "RN na ako! BATCH '09 " (Back)

11:30 am. At Magsaysay Park, the starting point of the Motorcade.
Supposedly, I chose to ride Ann's Pick up truck, mas masaya kasi kapag hindi enclosed ang sinasakyan. Unfortunately, the sun showed off. So hot lah!
So I run to Ray's. ALAS! No space for new passenger. Siksikan na sila parang sardinas! So i rode with Janus' instead. Thank you sa ride! Budoy was at the front seat. Among the passengers, he was the noisiest (hehe). super saya!

12:15 pm. It's showtime! Way back when I was still a student, my beloved clinical instructor (who loves to wear color-matched clothes) allowed us to join the 2007 NLE board passers motorcade. It was fun, but our motorcade is a lot more fun because instead of celebrating for the new nurses, I am celebrating with them. Photo below: (Right) Ray's car with Shem showing off for the camera. (Left) One of the cars from the motorcade, "RNs Inside", nice idea!

This photo below resembles a very famous jingle. If you are from the Philippines, I know you are familiar with president-wanna-be Manny Villar's Ad campaign. "Nakaligo ka na ba sa dagat ng basura? Nagpasko ka na ba sa gitna ng kalsada? Yan ang tanong namin, tunay ka bang isa sa amin?". Si Manny Villar daw ang tunay na mahirap. Contrarily, according to surveys, he is one of the richest citizens in the Philippines. If he is poor, how will i label my self? Aliping sagigilid? Kidding aside, Photo Below: My dear friend Pamela aka Chuchay, she is our class' best actress. I love spending time with her.

1:30 pm. School at last. Recognition. Dr. Nestor Arce rendered a speech. Free food (wide smile). Short Program. Games (our level coordinators played hephephurray against Kaye). And all that Jazz. Lunch Time. Salamat Lord.

Lost and Found

It was the last day of November 2009, when I took the last 2 sets of my board exam, few days after (at the same week); I immediately looked for a job. I thought that move was cool and clever but after series of events I gradually apprehend that it was impulsive and erroneous step. Few days before Christmas, opportunity finally flopped on my lap. A manager from the company I applied for gave me a call, informing me that I will be having my training. It was good news of course. Being prolific is one of the sources of my joy. But there’s a little problem, actually a big problem. For those days when I was chasing luck, I disdained myself and my family was well aware of that. So, they enrolled me to an International English Language Test Review Center. My situation wasn’t that complicated at all, I just have to decide what to choose and what to loose. Job or Class?

Most often than not, I am indecisive. I guess it’s because most of my life I don’t get of chance to decide. I just follow what I am told to do and do good. I hate pressure, although my years in college were like living in a pressure cooker. Here's a point that I have to decide fast and its better be good.

How do I want things to happen? That question helped me a lot to decide. I don’t want work to by sitting in front of the computer and attending foreign clients. Although I love computers and interact to different people, but I want something big. As in Big. Thus, that eagerness to work at once (in my opinion) was just a mere peer pressure, sabay sa uso kumbaga bah. Besides, my mother already paid my enrollment fee for my review class and I don’t want to waste her efforts on working 7 days a week just to earn penny so that I can live a good life.

Impulsivity can only hurt your ego, take it from me.

Time to bounce back.

Up.

Lyrics

In my 25 Things blog entry, I wrote...
#15. The sweetest thing a guy did for me is to write a song.

LOL. there was a mistake on my previous post. You see, I'm not really familiar with UrbanDub and their songs. . SO I POSTED THE WRONG LYRICS.
Pardon my ignorance. The Lyrics I was talking about was on my Friendster account. Apparently, based on your comments that was not the case. Now, where to find? hmmm. . .

Something reminds me today about the covenant my parents and I had. Before I enter a relationship, I must first pass the board exam. I just passed (and I feel like I am more free to write). No! I don't want to mislead you. Don't think that this blog entry is about Wanted: Boyfriend. As time goes by, I feel like I want someone perfect. I'll guess tatanda akong dalaga. (hehe) As of now, I'm too preoccupied building my name. YoungCampbell, BSN, RN soon to be Licensed Medical Transcriptionist. What's next in line? I'm not certain yet. It'll be fun!
