Crouching Tigress Wounded Falcon

University of Santo Tomas Versus Adamson University.
Finals. Game 1
Photos from a good man Joey Villaluz.

Both coaches are confident. It was a roller coaster ride for Adamson before they landed in the court fighting for the finals. Drums beating from both schools giving more intensity to the game. Adamson scored first yet Maiza (Aiza+Maizo) hit things up by her solid blocks, showing off why she was the best blocker last conference. Angela Benting, the team captain of the flying ladies continues to amaze me with her superb high leaps equating to UST’s height advantage. Side note: Angela or gela, the pride of Bacolod is a record setter, having 37 point in a game. Call her human?! Back to UST Maruja “Maru” Banaticla, 16 year old rookie is playing like a veteran with a 67% attack percentage making her as one of the tigress’ scoring machines. Seeing her play, I know she’ll be one of the future Philippine Volleyball Superstars. Maizo plus crowd favorite Ma. Angeli Tabaquero continue to slash falcon’s wings through their blocks and power spikes earning 3 and 17 points respectively compared to Adamson’s 1 and 10. Set One ended by 25-15 for UST.

Adamson waddly started this set while both team captains seem to have bad hair day. Turing things around, it's Adamson’s veteran Jill Gustillo and beginner acting like a veteran Pau Soriano creating damage to UST’s offense by building a wall on top of the net saying, “no balls from tigers allowed” Indeed, both are successful as Benting gradually getting her groove back on the later half with her “off the block” intelligent attacks. Another falcon soaring high, fresh from the bench Hiponia, the serve specialist scored 3 straight aces. Although Roxanne Pimentel, famously called as "ate Rox" tried to stop falcons through her blocks and famous running attacks it wasn’t enough, Adamson owned the second set 19-25

A rumble on the 3rd set! Maiza, still not on her element, getting frustrated seeing her team playing the game of Adamson. Meantime Maru is back in the game replacing Judy Ann Caballejo and tall setter Rhea Dimaculangan successfully and consecutively denying Angela Benting scoring some points, In the end it’s the 34 year old Philippine Volleyball National Hero Roxanne Pimentel scores the set point 22-25, UST.

Although you can see in the photo that it’s a skirmish against San Sebastian, focus your attention to the triple-man block. Not one, not two but there tall ladies with Pimentel, standing 6’1 in the middle also called as the GREAT WALL OF UST. This is an effective strategy on stopping Benting's sharp spikes. On the other side of the coin, it is Pau Soriano, blocking the UST superstarts, Aiza Maizo and Rox Pimentel. An 8-0 run in favor to the Falcons, started when Benting set foot on the serving area. Another turn around of the table when Pimentel blocked Soriano and unintentionally hit her on her face. (That’s what we call, “In you face”). UST back on the game with Dmac having applying combination attacks making good use of her attackers. Game 1 goes to UST!

Sunshine

This entry is entitled "sunshine" just because of the sun shining that you can see at the upper left of my page =) Isn't it better than to name this post as "UNTITLED"?

Hello blog world! I’m back from the outerspace!

Been busy and feeling low for quite a while so I decided to changed my blog theme into something bright (to lift up my spirit ). I still need 1 DR case and 2 major cases. : ( it took away my excitement of having review classes. Anyway, I have 3 stories for you.

STRESSLESS IS STRESSFUL. Wake up late. Pig out. Web Lurking. Sleep late. That’s just a boring lifestyle. I’ve been semi-idle since I graduate and I realized how sucky to have a bum life! I’m not used to be not busy, stress has always been a part of my life. I’m not used to live without it. I wanna have review classes nah, at least I have something to focus on instead of worrying of my cases!

This is what we call, ENJOYING LIFE. I admit, my ABSdomen is getting flabby, I’m not pregnant for the record it’s just that I’m getting fat. My friends say that, “ate, you’re not sexy na” lol But I still weigh 47kgs, no change for 4 years at all. Guess I’ll never meet my 50kgs goal. Boooo! : (

CAMPEONE. When I was watching, I can’t help but smile! I am very pleased to know that a woman from our place named, Mary Jean Balse became Shakey’s Vleague two-time MVP. As most aficionados expected that it would be a tight game, coach shaq was able to push his players to the limits outgamed San Sebastian College 3 straight defeat, 25-18, 25-20, 25-22. The energy was so on as everything seems to go right in favor for the lady tigers. Balse lead the team with Maiza’s 14 points. UST’s tall players offensively construct firm wall of Espaňa along the net, not allowing the ladies from Recto to gain point. Simple yet very effective hits plus aces by Co also contribute a lot in the final match. Ortiz’s quick attack also worsen the bad reception of the opponents. Must mention the conference’s best setter and final’s MVP, Rhea Dimaculangan’s excellent performance with an average 80-85% success rate. (pretty high lah~).

Too bad for our fave thai import Jang Bualee who faild for the fifth time in four years to lead the stags to the championship. Better luck in October maybe. Now, isn't this a beautiful photo?

Rumors say that the crowd fave Angeli Tabaquero who was spotted with former captain Venus Bernal will be back to the team for the next UAAP season.

Come what may, Lady Tigers supporters are ONE for UST

go USTe!

go USTe!
by yuli flestado

Yesterday, the University of Santo Tomas tigresses lost against Far Eastern University lady tams. I’m quite disheartened of course. Although I have come to love the sport per se, I stay faithfully cheering for USTe! Every defeat is a heart break. Technically speaking, the season for the tigresses has not yet ended since they still have to bout Adamson Lady Falcons for the third spot title. The skirmish for third spot lead me in question, will the fangs of the tigers still eager to chump the falcons or will they just let go of the match as an after effect of yesterday’s game. UST is a very moody team, they are consistently erratic.

It was a very lethargic start for UST, in fact the first point was earned by FEU. Aiza Maizo the team captain was well guarded by the tams. Setter Rhea Dimaculangan was reprimanded to distribute the ball to the other players as Maizo had difficulty creating successful attacks. There were also a lot of errors seen in the game, net and service may be common yet causing so much self destruction, Maizo was also seen trying to cross the ball using her right hand, of course that did work well. Ortiz, the quicker wasn’t able to contribute points as expected on her. Ditto with the case for the silent operator Bernice Co who was also reprimanded for her blocking skills, she is famed for her simple yet intelligent attacks but there’s no much room for those yesterday day as points were mostly gained coming from bullet-speed spikes. At the middle part of the game, Coach Shaq de los Reyes tried some experiment of combinations letting Lorraine Zapanta, Kim Lazaro, Sarah Gonzales and Jesicca Curato played inside the court. It was a no show for crown favorite and used to be the main setter of UST, Denise Tan. During the fourth set while FEU was few points away from wining, someone form UST said, “hindi tayo pwedeng matalo”. Sad thing, Rachele Daquis put the nail in the coffin by a powerful hit ending UST’s chance to claim back the lost crown.

With regards to the teams playing for the finals, it offer a very palatable meal for all volleyball aficionados out there. The FEU lady tams is a team not new to the finals, they’ve been playing for that volley-crown even before I was born. Despite of the major absence of the superstar (famed for her setting and spiking abilities) and last season’s most valuable player Semana and of course the support plays coming from Babanto and Cafranca, the team successfully found its groove. Young setter Jose is now quite comfortable in her position tossing for powerful spikers Gonzalez and the female version of Edjet Mabbayad, Morada. Daquis who used to work as a loner previously has now developed skills in leading her team as she is now the captain ball. Back during V-league days, the team was questioned on their strategy of letting the benchwarmers play. The team’s poor performance at that league definitely paid off as what is happening now in the court. Can the tamaraws mash into pebbles the arrows of the lady green archers?

Or will the archers hit bull’s eye the tamaraws? The De la sale lady spikers undoubtedly is at its peak. Santos who is one of the responsible spikers for la salle’s three-peat era is maturely leading her team towards success. Mercado and Alarca are also playing prolifically. Must mention, their new setter is quite compensating for the absence of Saet. The question is, will they stand the pressure being at the finals? Their statistic would show that they are having difficulty in wining when there’s a fifth set. The main point is, if they cannot grab the crown for this season, most likely it’ll be after 48 years before they could play in the finals again. This season is undoubtedly rookies show. There are a lot of first timers who play like veterans, to mention few people we have Soriano of Adamson, Ortiz, Caballejo and CO for UST, the almost all-rookie-ADMU. To think, how would the archers compete with today’s rookies? No problem if they are hiding some secret weapon(s) though. Not to take anything away from DLSU, but this season is a should-make situation.

Will it be FEU or DLSU? Both teams are worthy for the crown but I’m infinitely cheering Go USTe! :P
